- Fairwinds - River's Edge
In May of 1804, Captain Meriwether Lewis and his friend Second Lieutenant William Clark set out on what was then known as the Corps of Discovery Expedition. The first American expedition to cross the western United States, their journey is now famously known as The Lewis and Clark Expedition. Residents from Fairwinds – River’s Edge recently took their own expedition to learn more about the historical significance of their own backyard in the famous expedition that shaped the American economy and commerce.
An Expedition of Their Own
Fairwinds – River’s Edge independent living is located in St. Charles, Missouri, which was also the final embarkation point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. 12 residents recently took their own expedition to understand the historical significance of their city in the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition.
At the historic Lewis and Clark site in Hartford, IL residents watched a video about the Camp River Dubois and the Lewis and Clark encampment, toured the mock military encampment, and learned from individuals in period-piece clothing. The historic site also gave guided tours and provides visitors with a unique look into the lifestyle of settlers in the early 19th century.
Carole Long, Fairwinds – River’s Edge resident, enjoyed the journey saying,
“What I found interesting was that they built a keel boat to scale, with one side being the exterior and the other being open so you could see how compactly everything had to be stored. We were running out of time, but I encouraged folks that it was worth the walk to see this exhibit.”
The boat was constructed by hand and is 55 feet long with a mast reaching more than 30 feet high. The exterior of the boat is impressive, and it also gives visitors an insight into how provisions were stored on their long journey into unknown and uncharted territory.
After our grand expedition, all the residents stopped at My Just Desserts for lunch and, of course, dessert.
