Falls can pose a huge threat to senior health and independence causing hospitalization, hip fractures, brain injuries, and more. Preventing falls in and around the home becomes increasingly important with age. That’s why Heritage Estates independent living and assisted living senior living community is partnering with a local physical therapist to host a fall prevention and safety seminar.
Learn more about the seriousness of falls and how you can join the seminar on May 17.
The Importance of Fall Prevention
Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries among seniors and can threaten health, wellness, independence, and financial security. Falls pose a serious risk to senior health and falling once doubles the chance for falling again. That’s why it’s important to prevent falls from happening in the first place.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found that,
- More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falling
- Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries
- Over 800,000 people per year are hospitalized from injuries from a fall
- 1 out of 5 falls causes a serious injury (i.e. broken bones or head injury)
- Every year, 2.8 million seniors are treated in emergency rooms for injuries related to a fall
Even if a fall is not serious, many seniors become afraid of falling again and limit their activity to prevent falls, which causes them to lose muscle strength and actually increases the likelihood of another fall.
Community Event to Prevent Falls and Increase Safety
Heritage Estates is teaming up with Hope Home Health to host a seminar on preventing falls and increasing safety. As seniors age, falls become more likely and can lead to serious consequences. As with most things, prevention is the best treatment when it comes to falls and protecting yourself and your loved ones from the effects of a fall.
The seminar will be led by Michele Mar-Jose, BS, MPT and Hope Home Health Physical Therapist. She has over 16 years of experience and is widely considered an expert in her field. The seminar will cover common causes of falls, steps to prevent falls, and will also include physical therapy exercises to improve strength, flexibility, and balance. Join us at the Livermore Civic Public Library on Thursday, May 17 at 10:30 am to learn more!
