Russellville Park senior living in Portland recently celebrated the diversity of our community with a fun and vibrant event full of art, live music, food, and Portland’s own Mel Brown! Learn more about the event and how Russellville Park celebrates the rich history of diversity in Portland.

Celebrating Portland’s Diversity at Russellville Park

Russellville Park residents and staff strive to positively impact the local Portland community, taking an active and intentional interest in the area where they live, work, and play. The senior living community recently hosted Razzle Dazzle Russellville, a celebration of community, culture, and creativity with live music, food, art, and a special surprise guest appearance by Mel Brown, one of the most prominent jazz musicians in Portland. Guest chefs created a soul menu featuring southern fried chicken, collard greens, potato salad, cornbread, yams, sweet potato pie, and sweet tea. Our in-house bartender poured wine samples from Abbey Creek Vineyard, Bertony Faustin, the first recorded Black winemaker in Oregon.

Resident and local artists donated their creations for a silent auction. Proceeds benefited the Brian Grant Foundation, which provides tools to improve the well-being of people living with Parkinson’s. Russellville Park residents and their guests raised $1,200 in three short hours!

The event culminated in a performance by Portland’s own Poison Waters drag show where a resident gifted the artist with a piece of art deco jewelry, stating it “had to be given to someone that would have the courage to wear it.” Residents and staff had a great time with family and friends. Event contributor and resident Gerry Caldwell had 12 friends and family members join him for the night. His sister won a signed basketball from Portland’s Trailblazer Brain Grant.
